The 3 Levels of Gratitude

There are 3 levels of gratitude where one individual could be. The further along an individual moves, the more likely it is they reach true happiness and success.  It’s almost cliche these days but gratitude can truly transform your life.

Gratitude allows you to focus on the positive, increases your immune system, improves your mental and physical state and makes you more attractive to those around you!

Most people get that concept. They want to believe in the power of gratitude but they still don’t quite put it into practice regularly.  Let’s see if we can figure out why.

This is Key #1 in our 7 Keys You NEED to Unlock a Better Life NOW

I’ve found that there are essentially 3 different levels of gratitude.

Thanksgiving Gratitude – This is when someone thinks about being grateful when they are reminded to do so, such as at Thanksgiving. Generally, individuals that are at this level only think about the gratitude for the very basic of things such as family, friends, job/business, car/home, pets and their chosen higher power. Beyond this basic list, they struggle to think of additional things for which to be grateful.

Positive Gratitude – At this level, an individual is likely to feel and express gratitude on a regular, consistent basis -maybe even daily. They are able to see gratitude in a larger range of things such as a sunny day, a new opportunity, a hug or smile.  The Positive Gratituders are more observant and recognize all the good things that they have in their lives.

Positive Gratituders don’t need to be reminded to be grateful but generally do so consciously.

Higher Gratitude – Once a person reaches this level, they are able to be grateful for EVERYTHING in their lives. This level requires a person to be able to appreciate both the good and the perceived bad in any and every situation. A person at Higher Gratitude can be grateful for job loss, divorce, even loss of a loved one. Being able to connect with and see the aspects of any situation that one could be grateful for is what leads one to achieve Higher Gratitude.

This level of gratitude finds one feeling and expressing their gratitude from an almost subconscious place.  It is a natural and normal part of who they are.

Most individuals will fall into Thanksgiving Gratitude. As they begin to progress through personal development programs, many of them will move into the Positive Gratitude level. Only those that are very serious about becoming the best they can be, however, will move into Higher Gratitude.

Progressing from Thanksgiving to Positive Gratitude

Moving from Thanksgiving Gratitude to Positive Gratitude requires making a conscious decision to start looking for and expressing your gratitude regularly. Determine how you will create a habit of doing this on a regular basis. My book, Positivity on Purpose, gives several suggestions. One idea is to post your gratitudes daily on Facebook or in Facebook group that supports that. Make it a habit and stick to it. Find something different to be grateful for each week.

Progressing from Positive to Higher Gratitude

Taking the leap from Positive to Higher Gratitude is a little more challenging, only in that it isn’t fully a conscious decision. You can’t entirely CHOOSE this for yourself. However, with enough time at Positive Gratitude and taking on the rest of the 7 Keys to Unlock a Better You, you will begin to see the positive in every situation and naturally move towards Higher Gratitude.  You can encourage the process, though, by actively looking for the positive in any situation. When you can’t find it, ask for help. Then allow yourself to believe what is being shared with you. It may take a leap of faith so be prepared.

At a minimum, seek to reach Positive Gratitude while continuing to strive for Higher Gratitude. The further along the spectrum you get, the better “you” you will be.

How often do you focus on gratitude and what do you do count it?

  1. The first prayer we (or, at least some of us) are commanded to say each morning: I thank (bow?) you, eternal and all-present King, that you have restored my soul to my body with mercy and love- with your manifold trust in me that I will use it well.
If you say that each morning- and believe it- you will act so…

Believing is sometimes the challenging part. That’s where faith can come in.
