Tip 27 How To Accomplish that Dreaded Task

Do you have that one (or maybe two or three or a dozen) things that you just never seem to get started because they are so dreaded or daunting?  No matter how much you know you should, you just keep putting it off.  Every time you think about getting started, you find something else to do.  Something more important or, something just to distract you.

For me, the biggest dreaded task is exercise.  Close second would be house cleaning or packing my orders to be shipped out.  I could go into the psychoanalysis of why I hate to do these things but this one little trick seems to work almost every time.

To accomplish that dreaded task, just give it 15 minutes.

When I’m really dreading the task, I commit to giving it just 15 minutes.  At the end of 15 minutes, I can quit, even if I’m not done.

You see, starting is half the battle.  Starting is the biggest barrier to accomplish that dreaded task.  When you can just get started, amazing things happen.

No matter what the task, if I commit to just 15 minutes, I rarely work for just 15 minutes.  I get into it and find that it’s not so bad and I may as well just finish what I started.

Sometimes, though, I do quit after 15 minutes.  And that’s ok because I’ve honored my commitment to myself.  I’ll plan for another 15 minutes at another time.

Now, I’ve had a couple of coaching clients tell me this doesn’t work for them because they already know that they’ll end up sticking to it longer than 15 minutes and this knowledge keeps them from getting started.  First of all, that’s not the point.  The point is, you want to just get started no matter how long you know you’ll work on the task.  Who cares if you know you’ll work longer than 15 minutes?  Isn’t that kind of a good thing?  Secondly, if this is truly a problem, here’s the solution.  STOP at 15 minutes!  Don’t ALLOW yourself to work past that 15 minute point on certain occasions.  Set a timer and, when it goes off, give yourself a huge pat on the back and move on to something else.

And if that still doesn’t work for you? Call me for a life coaching session!

What is your favorite way to accomplish that dreaded task that you never seem to get to?
