I’ll Do it When…itis
We go through life telling ourselves that now isn’t the best time.
“I’ll do it when I get a job.”
“I’ll do it when I get married.”
“I’ll do it when I have kids.”
“I’ll do it when the kids get into school.”
“I’ll do it when the kids get out of school.”
And on and on.
Instead, you have to get to the root of the problem to find the cure. I’ve found in my You Coaching practice that there’s always a reason someone has for not getting something done. It isn’t just about procrastination, it’s about fear. There’s always a reason right now doesn’t work for someone simply because they have a fear of doing it, whatever “it” is.
Susan Jeffers wrote, arguably, the best book on fear ever written entitled, Feel the Fear . . . and Do It Anyway. Much more than the title suggests, this book provides invaluable tips and tools on how to overcome the fear once experiences to move on and move up in their life.
Susan has a grate little quote in her book.
If everybody feels fear when approaching something totally new in life, yet so many are out there “doing it” despite the fear, then we must conclude that FEAR IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
Wait, Nicole, didn’t you just say fear WAS the problem? Some You Coach you are!
Oh, in deed I did say that. It isn’t that HAVING fear is the problem, it’s how we HOLD on to that fear and use it as an excuse to prevent us from getting everything we want that is the problem. Everyone has fear. But not everyone lets that fear stop them from going out and getting what they want.
For every excuse you may come up with, there is someone on this planet of over 6 billion people, that are overcoming their fear and accepting the challenges of the exact same excuse. For every multitude of reasons you may have, there is someone out there that has more “problems” and harder obstacles but still manages to create their own life.
You have a choice. Choose to face your fear and do it anyway or continue to live a life of mediocrity. Which do you choose?
